How new technology could offset spikes in auto accidents

The technology drivers in California have increased access to could reverse the recent spike in auto accidents related to phone usage and other driver distractions and marijuana use. This is what an analyst from a leading investment bank predicts will happen in the not-too-distant future. These predictions come following a 30 percent increase in motor vehicle accident rates since 2011 - although some other analysts attribute this increase, in part, to higher employment levels and more miles driven by motorists.

Widespread use of smartphones and marijuana legalization are among other factors that have been linked to increased instances of auto accidents nationwide. A 2016 insurance company survey noted a nearly 40 percent spike in the number of drivers who own cellphones from 2011 figures along with a sharp increase in Internet access while driving. However, the analyst believes collision avoidance technology will soon reverse car accident rates and make roads safer. Incidentally, nearly 80 percent of drivers admit an easier ability to get connected online from various handheld or mobile devices increases the risk of accidents.

According to an Insurance Institute for Highway Safety (IIHS) report, states where marijuana is legal experienced a 5 percent boost in police-reported crashes compared to what was seen in states where this substance is still illegal. Still, the financial analyst making predictions about technology and accident stats contends advanced driver assistance systems with features that include lane departure warnings, rear parking sensors, and auto emergency braking could eventually bring these figures down. It's also predicted that 99 percent of vehicles may have such systems by 2022.

With auto accidents involving possible negligence, an attorney may be able to help injured drivers or passengers explore their legal options, especially if insurance companies are making settlement offers and urging injured parties to sign documents. A lawyer might be able to help accident survivors seek appropriate compensation under certain circumstances to cover incurred losses such as medical expenses, lost wages, and vehicle repairs. Having access to legal advice may also minimize issues with accident victims unintentionally signing away rights to pursue legal action or missing filing deadlines for personal injury claims.
