The differences between truck accidents and car accidents

Drivers in California know that truck accidents are generally more severe than car collisions. The occupants of a passenger vehicle involved in a truck accident may be left with catastrophic injuries and long-term medical conditions. This often means paying for more medical care. Furthermore, the vehicle itself may become undrivable due to the force of impact that the truck's weight brings with it.

These are just three ways that a truck accident differs from a car accident, but there are others. For example, the very severity of truck accidents means that they are more liable to lead to wrongful death lawsuits. The Federal Motor Carrier Safety Administration estimates that truck crashes kill between 3,000 and 5,000 people every year. These lawsuits can be high cost and result in million-dollar settlements.

For this reason, those who survive a truck crash may need a more experienced lawyer than they would after a car crash. Trucking insurance carriers will, after all, have their own legal teams defending them.

This leads to another distinction. The laws govern every aspect of a trucker's actions from how they maintain their trucks to how they fill out their work logs. Therefore, finding fault with a trucker is more complex. Lastly, a trucker's insurance policy is about 50 times larger than a car insurance policy. This raises the stakes when victims file a lawsuit.

Someone who is involved in an auto accident caused by a trucker may schedule a case evaluation with a lawyer. Legal counsel could hire experts to investigate the crash and gather proof of negligence, such as physical evidence at the crash site and the trucker's work log, truck maintenance records and phone records.
