GHSA says more progress needed to reduce speeding deaths

Researchers with the Governors Highway Safety Association say that nearly one-third of all automobile-related deaths in California and the rest of the U.S. are caused by speeding. The association released a report entitled, "Speeding Away from Zero: Rethinking a Forgotten Traffic Safety Challenge," which lays out some of the latest research and data on speeding as well as some ways to address the issue.

One way is through better education. Speeding does not come with a cultural stigma in the same way that, for instance, driving without a seat belt does. The fact remains that speeding can raise the risk of serious injuries and fatalities, especially among pedestrians and cyclists. On the other hand, reducing travel speed even slightly can reduce the severity of a potential impact and injury.

Many cities, such as Boston and New York City, have succeeded in reducing speeding through alterations in their speed limits. However, the GHSA states that prevention measures are most needed in rural areas. In fact, 2016 alone saw more than 5,000 speeding-related crash deaths on rural roadways.

The GHSA also encourages the building of traffic calming elements like roundabouts. It hopes to develop an integrated speed reduction program. In April, the GHSA and Insurance Institute for Highway Safety will be holding a forum with major stakeholders.

Not knowing the dangers of speeding will not excuse a speeder who causes a car accident. An innocent victim can file a claim against the negligent driver's auto insurance company in the effort to be compensated for crash-related damages. However, they might want to hire a lawyer for the process. A lawyer can handle settlement negotiations or litigate if necessary.
